Team Teaching
Team Teaching in Mathematics is an initiative introduced in our school, with the aim of developing positive pupil attitude and motivation to mathematics, while developing and consolidating pupils’ mathematical knowledge. It commenced in the Infant classes and has been rolled out to all classes since its introduction in 2012.
Each class engages in team teaching on a daily basis for a period of eight weeks. Team teaching is facilitated by the class teacher and four Special Education teachers. The class is divided into five groups, with one teacher assigned to each group of pupils. There is a focus on pupils engaging in active learning and using concrete materials, with a strong emphasis on the acquisition and effective use of accurate mathematical language.

Each thirty minute lesson is based on the strands of the mathematics curriculum. During the first eight minutes, pupils participate in whole-class warm-up activities such as number rhymes/songs, number line activities, interactive whiteboard games and oral arithmetic games with the class teacher. The next twelve minutes are allocated to interactive group games and activities. Each group engages with material from a different curriculum strand each day.
Junior pupils reinforce and consolidate concepts and number facts, using games such as King of Maths Junior and Maths Duel on the tablets, while senior pupils engage in activities on Khan Academy, Times Tables and King of Maths Senior. The appropriate use of computer games within the intervention programme has a positive influence on pupils’ motivation, enthusiasm and engagement with the tasks.
Small interactive group work is always followed by a ten minute plenary session, allowing one pupil from each group the opportunity to describe his/her activity to the whole class. The teachers engage in purposeful questioning to deepen the pupils’ understanding of the target mathematical concept and to encourage accurate and effective use of mathematical language.
